Trip Overview

Pisang Peak, also known as Jong Ri, stands tall at 6,091m and is one of Nepal’s most loved, popular, and recommended peaks for expeditions. The peak’s western slope, shielded by a hanging ice mass, offers thrilling trials. A German expedition team was the first to climb it successfully in 1955. This peak expedition is also considered one of the easy climbing trails, as anyone without climbing experience or some basic mountaineering skills can do this expedition. Still, one should have high physical endurance as they have to pass through zigzag terrain, snow-covered pathways, and slopes with rocks and sands. The Marsyangdi River separates it into two sections: Lower Pisang (3,200m) and Upper Pisang (3,300m). Some of the exciting aspects of this expedition include shifting landscapes and diverse ecosystems & civilizations.

Pisang Peak is best climbed in the spring (April–May) and fall (October–November) when temperatures are pleasant and there is little possibility of rain. It is challenging to ascend the massive granite slabs that line the Pisang Peak summit path, particularly when it rains and snows. The summit of the Peak offers breathtaking up-close views of the neighboring snow-capped mountains, including Mt. Annapurna, Mt. Manaslu, Chulu Range, and many more. This expedition covers both the Manang and Mustang regions of Nepal, which helps in exploring the different cultures, religions, monasteries, and temples. Also, you will cross the highest pass in the area, Thorung La Pass (5,416m).

This expedition trail connects to those of the Annapurna Circuit, which means you may encounter many trekkers along the trail. Although the quick ascend to a higher altitude from Pisang village to the summit of Pisang Peak also has drawbacks, we have planned a suitable schedule that includes enough days of acclimatization before the summit to reduce the chance of altitude sickness.

Trip Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu

Upon arrival at the airport, you will be transferred to the hotel. In the afternoon, you can stroll around Thamel and the local streets of Kathmandu. Enjoy a welcome dinner with a typical Nepali cultural program in the evening.

Overnight at Kathmandu.

Day 02: Kathmandu Sightseeing: UNESCO World Heritage Sites

After breakfast, our guide will take you to the Swayambhunath Temple. Swayambhunath Temple, also known as the Monkey Temple, is a revered and historic Buddhist stupa atop a hill in Nepal’s Kathmandu Valley. It represents Buddhism and Hinduism. The sound of revolving prayer wheels, burning incense, and waving colorful prayer flags in the breeze will welcome you as you ascend the hill. When you reach the summit, you’ll be drawn to the enormous stupa with eyes painted in each cardinal direction. From the pinnacle of Syambhunath stupa, you will get to witness the stunning view of the Kathmandu Valley.

Spending a few hours exploring and discovering this stupa’s beauty, we drive to our next attraction of today, Kathmandu Durbar Square. The Kathmandu Durbar Square, also known as Basantapur Durbar Square or Hanuman Dhoka, is an astonishing attraction with history, culture, and beautifully built architecture tucked away in the middle of Nepal’s capital city. It draws tourists from all over the world. As you enter, you can witness the Kumari Ghar (the Temple of the Living Goddess) standing in the middle of the square. Also, you can visit the 17th-century royal Palace that now functions as a museum. Travelers to Nepal should make time to view Kathmandu Durbar Square, as it is the most culturally and religiously diverse region in Nepal, and witness the monuments, art, architecture, culture, and many idols that showcase the talents of several artists and craftspeople spanning several centuries.

Later in the evening, you will visit the Pashupatinath Temple on the northeastern side of Kathmandu, around 3 km east of the Kathmandu Durbar Square. Pashupatinath Temple, devoted to Lord Pashupatinath (Lord Shiva), is a destination for pilgrims and devotees. Lord Shiva, known as the god of change and destruction, is one of the main gods in Hinduism. The temple is a center of worship for followers of Lord Shiva, drawing pilgrims and visitors from all over the world and the local populace. You can witness the Sandhya Aarati, where oil lamps are lighted, and the pundits chant devotional songs. The soul-stirring music, the captivating glow of the lamps, and the rhythmic clap sound of devotees and visitors create a calm and contemplative ambiance.

After this, we will drop you off at your hotel, where you can have dinner and rest.

Overnight at Kathmandu.

Overnight at Upper Pisang.

Day 07: Acclimatize at Upper Pisang (3,300m)

Adjusting to the higher altitude is essential, and gaining altitude too fast could lead to altitude sickness. For this reason, we will acclimatize today in the Upper Pisang Village and gain some insights regarding the climbing of the peak.

After a decent breakfast, we will go sightseeing around the village and explore the different communities, including Ghale, Gurung, and Tibetans. We will also visit the nearby monastery, which offers fantastic views of Mt. Gangapurna and Mt. Annapurna.

Day 09: Trek to Pisang Peak High Camp (5,400m)

Today’s trek will be more challenging as we ascend sharply to 5,400m, a massive change of over 1000m altitude in 5-6 hours. You will climb through the steep and narrow trail, and as you go further, you will walk through only a snowy trail.

The camps are set before we reach the High Camp. Once we reach the High Camp, we will find our camps, rest for a while, and eat. The guide will provide climbing skills and information on using tools like axes, crampons, etc. Our guide will fully monitor each climber and maintain safety in each step, but knowing how to use gears and skills is essential.

Then, you will return to your camp and sleep well, as you need to be physically and mentally fit for tomorrow’s summit push.

Overnight at Pisang Peak High Camp.

Day 10: Ascend to the summit of Pisang Peak (6,091m) and return to Base Camp (4,380m)

Finally, the day has arrived when we will reach our destination, the Pisang Peak Summit. Today’s trek will be the most adventurous and thrilling as you pass a rocky ridgeline and sloppy, snowy trail. Wherever required, our guide has already placed ropes along the way.

You will cross the final ridge and step into the summit of Pisang Peak. Once you are at the summit, all that pain and stress will be gone, and you will collect the memories of a lifetime. Breathtaking views of Annapurna, Manaslu, Chulu range, Himlung, etc., are some of the snow-capped mountains you can view from the summit.

We will spend quality time enjoying the scenery and capturing images and videos. But we need to head back soon, as there might be the risk of solid wind hitting us in the afternoon. Following the same trail, we will reach Pisang Peak Base Camp, where we will spend the night.

So, we will start early today as we have to pass the Thorung La before noon because of the strong wind. We will walk through steep, snowy trails for 4-5 hours to reach the Thorung La Pass.

We will spend some time at Thorung La Pass, enjoying the magnificent panoramic view of snow-capped mountains, including Mt. Annapurna and Mt. Dhaulagiri. Then, we descend through a rocky, steep trail to reach Thorong River. After crossing the bridge, we walk through barren land until we reach Muktinath, a pilgrimage for Hindus and Buddhists. For Buddhists, Muktinath is the sacred place of Nirvana, and for Hindus, it is the holy temple of Lord Vishnu. Hindus believe in getting salvation once they visit Muktinath, as Mukti means salvation and Nath means Lord, so it is the temple of the Lord of Salvation.

Today, we will stroll around the Muktinath area and get rest for the remainder of the day.
